Bowsers or Osterburg Covered Bridge WGCB 38-05-22 Bedford County PA |
Bowsers or Osterburg Covered Bridge crosses Bobs Creek along Pa 869 near Osterburg in East St Clair township, Bedford county Pa, WGCB designation 38-05-22. It is a 10 panel single arch Burr truss, 97' 4" in length. Built in 1890, this particular design of Burr truss is typical of & unique to Bedford county bridges built between 1870 & 1902. This could be due to all being built by the same builder, or the county dictating the design. It was bypassed by a concrete bridge in 1973. It is in very good condition, I wouldn't be afraid to drive across it now. It originaly had high sides. as with many Bedford county bridges, the sides were cut down to improve vision once cars & trucks replaced buggys & wagons as the primary form of transportation. A few of the high boards are still in place where bolts run through the arch joints. A 1922 picture shows the sides were removed by that time. This portrait is 1-48 scale. The low whitewashed vertical plank siding is made to look as though it was original. This model represents Bowsers bridge as it appears today. It is on display in the dining room at The Jean Bonnet Tavern. |
