Cuppetts Covered Bridge WGCB-38-05-18 New Paris, Bedford County PA |
Cuppetts or the New Paris Bridge crosses Dunnings Creek along Pa 96 jus north of New Paris, Bedford county, PA, WGCB designation 38-05-18. This bridge was bypassed when the state built the current Rt Pa 96 in the 1930s, and is now in rather poor condition. The abutments are coming apart and there's substantial rot at the bridges bearing points. I won't attempt to predict how long it will last, but I will say I was not comfortable walking across it. It is a Burr arch, 8-panel, 68 feet long, built in 1882. The siding is cut off and removed to the level of the crash boards, as was done to many Bedford county bridges as automobiles became more prevalent. It was probably painted white when it was in use, but any trace of paint is long gone. Also gone are the portal roof overhangs, which are typical to this design of bridge. This portrait represents Cuppetts bridge as it appears today. It is 1/48 scale, unpainted with an antique cedar shake roof |
